Barleys Taproom

Barley's Taproom was born of a desire by the 2 founders to bring something special to the mountains of Western NC. Doug Beatty was working as a general contractor specializing in the restoration of 19th century buildings and Jimi Rentz was developing the now famous Barley's pizza recipe after years of managing Savannah's most popular pizzeria. While Doug had been working on a brewpub concept, Jimi was looking for a location to set up his own pizzeria. After a chance meeting through Jimi's wife, the two young men embarked on an ambitious project to open Asheville's first brew pub with the help of Highland brewery currently located in the basement of Barley's building. The partners located a 1920s building in the then evolving area of South Biltmore Avenue and set about renovating the bottom floor and the basement. After a falling out with the original owner of Highland Brewery prior to opening, the brewpub idea evolved into the %22taproom%22 concept. Barley's owners decided it was better to feature a large selection of American micro brews on tap than just the work of one brewery. After a 6 month building renovation, Barley's opened its doors on August 12, 1994 with 9 taps. After garnering such accolades as %22Top Tap in the South%22 and %22Best Taproom in the Southeast%22, the partners opened up their second location in 1996 in Greenville, SC and a third one in 1998 in Knoxville, TN.
