i know two possible buildings...
Where is the sanatorium in Asheville. I know of two buildings here that could maybe have been that. One was a nunery though (same thing?). Hmm.

a couple of options......
there is a beautiful hilltop building in kenilworth at 60 Caledonia Rd., Asheville that might have been the building in the picture. I haven't found a picture of it yet, but there are apartments on kimberly avenue, which were formerly the ottari sanatorium depicted in the picture below

Kennilworth Inn...
Thank you, that looks similar to the picture on my old envelope. Of course the building has been greatly enlarged and several stories added. I must admit the old building was much more beautiful. Can you suggest who I should write to. I'd like to know the years it was in operation, etc. Thank you again for your help & interest.

Oakland Heights Hotel...
I'm so sorry, I wrote back too soon. I went through your slide show and there is the picture exactly how it is printed on the envelope. It' listed as the Oakland Heights Hotel. Now we need to find out what came first, Hotel or Sanatorium. The 1cent postage stamp might be a clue. Thanks again for help and interest.

So this is it......
Well, not a lot of history info out there... on this website, http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nc/wnc21.htm I found the following description, which doesn't mention a sanatorium. Interesting though..."OAKLAND HEIGHTS. This hotel was built by the late Alexander Garrett and his son, Robert U. Garrett, in 1889. It afterwards became a girls' school, an4 then a hotel, having passed into the hands of the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions. It then became Victoria Inn, and during 1911 was purchased by the Catholic Church and is now St. Genevieve's College, a most excellent school for girls."

Sanitoriums...
There were many in Asheville for the treatment of TB as well as for mental illnesses. Could you be thinking of the old Highland Hospital? The Victoria Inn (formerly Oakland Hotel) pictured in the thread was mostly a tourist hotel; although, many tourists came here for the "cure." The nuns of St. Genevieve bought it in 1911 or so and lived and operated the school from there. They later expanded into other buildings nearby and the old main bldg got pretty dilapidated. The order could not afford to save it and it was torn down in the 70s.
